We also decided not to go retro as it would involve buying old hardware and the like, so we usually stick with modern platforms for this one.

Here is our list of the 5 Pokémon games to buy as gifts for this Christmas season.

Return to the Sinnoh region in Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Pokémon Shining Pearl!

Return to the Sinnoh region in Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Pokémon Shining Pearl!

Pokemon Shiny Diamond and Shiny Pearl

The most recent entry on this list, both Shiny Diamond Pokémon and Shiny Pearl Pokémon released last month. These are remakes of the fourth generation Diamond and Pearl taking place in the Sinnoh region.

There has been some controversy over art style and other issues by some players, but these are the more traditional Pokémon games on this list and looked like a nostalgic trip to a generation that was now almost 15 years ago. year. With new additions like the Grand Underground, most Pokémon fans will be pretty happy with this one.

New Pokémon Snap

Yet another outing this year, New Pokémon Snap released earlier this year and has wowed players with its sheer scale. The original Pokémon Snap became a bit of a cult classic and fans were ultimately rewarded for their long wait with the sequel they deserved.

While this is by no means your traditional Pokémon game, rolling around on rails to take photos of all kinds of Pokémon in different settings that vary depending on the time of day still feels like a major adventure. The original is also set to arrive on Nintendo Switch Online Expansion Pass in the near future, but certainly don’t sleep on that latest entry.

Pokémon Sword and Shield

Now we go back a few years to the last main entries in the series without a remake with Pokémon Sword and Pokémon Shield. These games opened up many new horizons, such as the Wild Area, but also encountered issues such as the massively reduced Pokedex.

At this point however, what you really want to achieve is the Pokemon Sword + Pokemon Sword Expansion Pass Where Pokemon Shield + Pokemon Shield Expansion Pass. This adds the two DLC packs for the game which added a lot more to the games and made it more complete at the end. You can even buy the base game and then let them buy the Expansion Pass later if they like it enough.

Pokémon, let’s go! Pikachu and let’s go! Eevee

And we continue to delve deeper into the past life of the Nintendo Switch with Pokémon, let’s go! Pikachu and Pokémon, let’s go! Eevee. These two are remakes of the original Pokemon Yellow, although they also replace Eevee instead of Pokemon in its own version.

The visuals are still fantastic, but the only downside for people is that wild Pokemon Battles are non-existent now. Instead, wild Pokémon encounters are now like Pokémon GO. This means that you will have to throw balls with motion controls or with the touchscreen instead. Even so, the game is a solid remake of Yellow and it’s a great Christmas option for young gamers who might never have played a Pokemon game before.

Pokémon GO / Pokemon Unite

And for our last entry on the list, we’re going to cheat a bit by including what two free games are. Pokémon Go is exclusive to mobile platforms, while Pokemon unite is available on Nintendo Switch and mobile platforms. However, we’re including them because both include microtransactions, so giving someone money for those microtransactions isn’t a bad gift idea.

Pokémon GO lets you spend in-game coins for additional storage, raid passes, egg incubators, and more. Pokemon unite will outright allow players to purchase licenses for Pokemon to use in the game, as well as purchase cosmetics and the like. If you’re struggling to find something for that Pokémon fan who seems to already have it all, these might not be bad options if you know they’re playing the game.

Premium: Pokémon Trading Card Game

Just because we were feeling generous for the holidays, we added an extra entry as this is not a video game, but more of a collectible card game. the Pokémon Trading Card Game experienced a massive resurgence last year and can be as big as ever right now.

It’s very difficult to find Pokemon TCG packs almost anywhere right now, so finding packs or boxes with them will likely make many Pokemon fans very happy if you had to give them away for Christmas.
