Nintendo’s latest financial data shows that Pokemon Sword and Shield is the second best-selling game in the Pokemon franchise.
While Pokemon Legends: Arceus is doing very well among the fans only a week after its launch, Pokémon Sword and Shield are still doing very well on their own. In fact, the level of success these games enjoy may surprise some Pokemon Fans.
Recent financial data from Nintendo revealed the lifetime sales of all Pokemon games across the franchise. Curiously, these data show that 2019 Pokémon Sword and Shield are now the second best-selling games in the series’ history.
In the data report, Nintendo lists Pokémon Sword and Shield as having sold a total of 23.9 million copies. Not only are these two games the second best-selling in the series, they are also the fifth best-selling games for the Nintendo Switch. Pokémon Sword and Shield sold 200,000 copies more than Pokémon Gold and Silverputting Gold Silver third at 23.7 million copies. The best-selling title in the series is Pokemon Red/Green/Blue to 31.38 million copies, almost eight million copies more than Sword and Shield.
During launch, Pokémon Sword and Shield were overwhelmed with controversy. The controversy began when development studio Game Freak decided to remove a number of Pokémon from Sword and Shield, including iconic ones such as Bulbasaur and Squirtle. Not only have 144 Pokémon been cut from Sword and Shieldbut Game Freak also cut a number of Pokemon moves, some of which were basic attacks that dated back to Gen 1. Even with disappointing animations on top of being the shortest games in the series, Sword and Shield managed to become the second best-selling games in the entire series.
Given Pokémon Sword and ShieldDue to poor reception and controversy, players might be surprised by these newly revealed stats. However, Game Freak did what the studio could to improve the game and appeal to the player base, regardless of how players perceived these two games at launch, which apparently paid off.
For other gamers, this news might not come as a surprise at all given that the series is known to have high sales figures. In fact, last year Pokémon Sword and Shield sold 18.22 million copies, with DLC also arriving for those titles. Game Freak’s continued support in the form of expansions has helped keep the game afloat, with new players flocking in to give Sword and Shield A try. Although Pokemon Legends: Arceus works well, there is a chance that Pokémon Sword and Shield will also continue to sell, maintaining its position near the top of series sales.
Pokémon Sword and Shield is now available on the Nintendo Switch.
