Nintendo revealed a very healthy set of financial results to the world yesterday. The juggernaut that is Animal Crossing: New Horizons continues to sell astronomically well, now ranking second in the all-time Switch software sales charts and the hardware isn’t doing too badly either, with over 61 million units sold.

This, however, is not the only interesting information we can glean from the results. First highlighted by Serebii’s Joe Merrick on Twitter, Pokémon Sword and Shield are now the third best-selling Pokemon games of all time. The pair has now sold 18.22 million copies in just nine months and sits just behind gold and silver in the lifetime sales chart. The top 10 looks like this:

  1. Pokemon Red/Blue – 31.38 million
  2. Pokemon Gold/Silver – 23.10 million
  3. Pokémon Sword/Shield – 18.22 million
  4. Pokemon Diamond/Pearl – 17.67 million
  5. Pokemon X/Y – 16.45 million
  6. Pokemon Ruby/Sapphire – 16.22 million
  7. Pokemon Sun/Moon – 16.18 million
  8. Pokemon Black/White – 15.64 million
  9. pokemon yellow – 14.64 million
  10. Pokemon Omega Ruby/Alpha Sapphire – 14.27 million

While the titles are still around five million dollars away Gold and silver, it’s incredibly impressive that the games are already so high in the rankings. Given the success of the Nintendo Switch, it wouldn’t be surprising to see sword and shield to go past Gold and silver in second place very soon. This will likely be further facilitated by the release of the second DLC expansion, Crown Tundra, later this year.

Unfortunately, one of the best Pokemon games, Crystal sits at the lowest Pokémon sales of all time, with approximately 6.3 million copies sold.

Not only is sword and shield get paid expansions to help boost sales, but The Pokemon Company is also continually adding small in-game events for players. Yesterday it was announced that until August 9, Pikachu, Raichu, Alolan Raichu, and Pichu will appear more frequently in Max Raid Battles with improved shine rates.

With the Pokemon Train showing no signs of slowing down, it will be interesting to see how the highly anticipated New Pokemon Snap made when it is published.
